"AJM" Art Jams is the product of a semester-long design research course aiming to use design thinking and problem-solving to aid in real-world social problems. This project aims to answer the question:
How can a collaboratively produced public art project improve the image of the 18th & vine district while educating the community about its rich history & entertainment?
AJM Art Jams is a community art event calling to all Kansas City artists. The prompt/call to artists will ask them to pitch a community-focused art project that educates the community about the 18th & vine districts' rich history in jazz music. This could involve sculpture, murals, or other kinds of public art installations.

Example of “chosen” artist project used to drive community education and creative placemaking of the 18th & Vine District in downtown Kansas City.
This artist project created letterpress printed posters with a group of students in the area. The posters focus on the history of Jazz music in the district and celebrate Charlie Parker Jr.’s 100th anniversary.
Charles Parker Jr., nicknamed "Bird" or "Yardbird", was an American jazz saxophonist, band leader, and composer. Parker was a highly influential soloist and leading figure in the development of bebop, a form of jazz characterized by fast tempos, virtuosic technique, and advanced harmonies.
Born in Kansas City, Kansas on August 29, 1920, Parker cut his musical teeth hanging out in the alleyways behind the nightclubs lining 12th Street in Kansas City, Missouri where Count Basie, Lester Young, Mary Lou Williams and other jazz legends engaged in marathon jam sessions.
