The High Line Canal Conservancy approached ArtHouse Design to create a unique package of interpretive signs for various rest areas along the High Line Canal Trail. The goal was to create something with a call to action that focuses on conservation, and speaks to children.
The Trunk-A-Scope is a tool for micro and macro exploration. At first, it acts as a microscope for leaf identification. Secondly, it becomes a telescope for tree identification. This is meant to engage users in closer inspection of what they see and find along the trail.
Utilizing recycled cottonwood, the trunk will be hollowed, smoothed and mounted to stacked stone found on the property. A concealed steel rod will securely attach the trunk to the stacked stones. A magnifying glass will be inserted into the arm of the trunk, while items for examination can be set inside the log. Users can then peer through the log to find the identified tree. The wooden post features a leaf identification guide specific to each character zone along the High Line Canal trail.
